About breast self-examination
Breast self-examination consists of the monthly exploration of the breasts and armpits allowing the women to know in detail the characteristics of their breasts. This allows rapid detection of any changes
The purpose of breast self-examination is to notify any changes that may be noticeable to your specialist doctor in mammary pathology
Breast self-examination should not replace medical judgment or mammograms
Who should perform the self-examination?
Monthly all women from the age of 20, including pregnant women, in breastfeeding, menopausal women and those with breast prostheses
When should it be done?
In the first days of the menstrual cycle, ideally between 7-10 days after menstruation ends. In women who do not have a menstrual cycle (pregnant, menopausal and occasionally breastfeeding) self-examination should be performed monthly on the same day of each month.
What findings should you consult with your doctor?
It is recommended that you contact your specialist doctor in the presence of one or more of the following findings:
-
New onset breast nodule.
-
Increased size of a previous nodule.
-
Inflammation / redness of the mammary skin.
-
Retraction of the skin.
-
Flaking of the skin of the breast or nipple.
-
Fluid discharge through the nipple.
-
In a high percentage of cases the presence of these findings will not be related to breast cancer, but they are alarm signs that should contact your doctor for an adequate diagnosis
